Fall SITREP

Major Announcement Coming Soon!

Recapping Local Mini Racing, Annapolis-Newport Race on a Class40, Back in Uniform, and U.S. Patriot Sailing

Where has the summer gone?! It has been a busy season full of racing, boat work and completing my military reserve obligations.

Recently we raced Terminal Leave in the Navy Fall Oxford Race. This 26 nm race starts in Annapolis and this year we had almost a hundred boats out on the race course, we were by far the smallest of course!

With upwind conditions and chop in the bay for most of the race, it was challenging but we made the most of it. As we entered the Choptank River we unfurled the code 0 for an excellent reach. Then the final leg with a downwind finish under A2 spinnaker off Tred Avon Yacht Club. Thank you Jane and Tyler for joining as crew!

Annapolis-Newport Race

In June, I raced to Newport on the Class40 Velocity (145) with Marty Roesch and crew. We finished 2nd in ORC 1 and ended up having a great race despite light winds and fog throughout much of it. There were also periods of incredible downwind spinnaker sailing and blast reaching. Great call by the team to head the farthest offshore during the second half of the race to stay in the wind!

Fun fact: Our crew member Pierre raced in the 2019 Mini Transat and then raced this Class40 across the Atlantic twice!

We also competed in the NYYC Annual Regatta Around the Island Race (2nd place in ORC B) and then came back in July for the NYYC Coastal Races and the Queen’s Cup. Overall this was a great experience racing on a bigger version of the Mini and learning from this talented crew. Thank you Marty for having me on board!

Back in the Uniform

From July 2024 - June 2025 I served on Active Duty again, this time as a full time student at Marine Corps University’s Command & Staff College. During this program I earned a Master of Military Studies degree and spent time learning with fellow majors from across all services and many countries. My school work involved a lot of military history, discussions on geopolitics, and military operational planning. After many late nights of reading and writing papers, I was excited to graduate!

After graduation, I went back into the Reserves and changed units this summer. In August I spent almost four weeks drilling with my new unit in Hawaii. Now as part of the Marine Forces Pacific (MARFORPAC) G-35 Future Operations (FOPS) Branch, I supported planning efforts for the largest operational command in the Marine Corps which reports to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. MARFORPAC is responsible for all of the Marines in the Pacific and is comprised of I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) and III MEF. When I was not in the office, Jane and I made the most of it by exploring O’ahu.

U.S. Patriot Sailing

I continue to support and represent the non-profit U.S. Patriot Sailing. With multiple locations across the country, the team helps many veterans through sailing. This summer we moved the GP26 from Solomons, MD to Annapolis which is a fun and sporty ride. This team is open to all veterans and active duty members regardless of sailing experience, please help spread the word!

Are you a veteran and an experienced sailor? Sign up and support the team!

In the coming weeks we will be making a big announcement and there will be opportunities for you to get involved with PGN Ocean Racing.
